RID Sponsor for CEUs

General Information

Are you trying to earn CEUs to keep your RID certification? Do you want to offer a workshop and provide RID CEUs?

OCRID is a Certification Maintenance Program (CMP) Sponsor with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). Interpreters who are certified by RID must document their continuing education activities through CMP sponsors to maintain their certification.

Interpreters who are not certified can also document their professional development experiences by participating in RID's Associate Continuing Education Tracking (ACET) program.  The process explained here applies for both the CMP and ACET programs.

Earning CEUs

CEUs (Continuing Education Units) can be earned through RID for workshops and conferences, as well as other learning activities such as college courses, self-study, and mentoring. These activities need to be documented by a CMP sponsor, such as OCRID. Certified interpreters must earn eight CEUs in four years in order to maintain certification.

No matter how you plan to earn CEUs, it always a good idea to contact the CMP sponsor before you begin to make sure your documentation will be complete and meet CMP deadlines. The CMP sponsor is also a great resource for ideas and information.

Workshops & Conferences
Many interpreting workshops and conferences, such as OCRID conferences and workshops, will already be approved for RID CEUs by the event coordinators. Check this out with the event coordinators in advance. Then all you have to do is sign the RID CMP form for that event. If the conference or workshop you want to attend is not approved for RID CEUs, you must get approval for RID CEUs from a CMP sponsor in advance and then provide documentation of your attendance afterwards, including a certificate of attendance and a flyer or brochure detailing the event. This is called a participant-initiated activity.

College Coursework
For academic coursework, you will need to submit a copy of the transcript, accreditation information from the college, and a course description to the CMP sponsor. It is a good idea to touch base with the CMP sponsor before the course to make sure you are aware of the deadlines for documentation of your coursework.

Independent Studies
To earn CEUs for individual activities, you will need to contact the CMP Sponsor before you begin. The sponsor will discuss your activity with you and ask you to respond in writing to the following questions:

  • What do I want to do? Briefly describe the activity you will complete for CEUs.
  • Why do I want to do it? Personal needs? Professional growth? Skill enhancement in a specific area? Increased general knowledge? Remaining current in the field?
  • What are my specific goals? Keep your goals measurable, observable, tangible!
  • How will I accomplish my goals? Briefly describe your action plan.
  • How will I show my sponsor what I learned? Describe your evaluation process.
  • How many CEUs is it worth?
Once the sponsor has approved your plan, you can begin work. When you are done, you turn in the documentation described in your plan to your sponsor along with a small fee. The sponsor will review your documentation and if all is in order, send all the necessary paperwork to RID.

To learn more, refer to the OCRID Policy Procedures Manual, visit RID's web site or contact OCRID's CMP Coordinator.

Offering RID CEUs

You can apply with OCRID's CMP Coordinator to provide RID CEUs at the workshop or conference you are sponsoring. The CMP coordinator will provide you with forms to be completed by the presenters and the host of the event which includes information such as the dates, times, goals, objectives, and methods of evaluation for the activity, as well as background information on the presenters. Completed paperwork must be submitted forty-five days prior to the event.

The level of the workshop will be determined jointly by the CMP coordinator and presenters. RID evaluation forms are also available for use, although use of RID's form is not required.

There is a fee for this service of $10 per CEU. However, this fee is waived for OCRID organizational members.
