The Ohio Chapter of the
Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (OCRID) has played an active role in nurturing the
growth of the interpreting profession since its inception in 1968. From encouraging
the professional development of its members to educating the public about the vital work
of interpreters, OCRID has supported its members and the Deaf community.
OCRID was founded in 1968 by Russell
Moore under the name OCID, the Ohio Chapter of Interpreters for the Deaf. In 1975, the
membership voted to affiliate with the Registry of
Interpreters for the Deaf and changed our name to OCRID as a result.
In 1999, OCRID's Board of Directors
adopted a mission statement, approved by the membership, to guide our planning and focus
our vision. This mission statement reads:
|
"The mission of the Ohio
Chapter of the Registry of
Interpreters for the Deaf is to foster relationships
which further the profession by providing opportunities
for growth through development and support."

OCRID is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors who are elected for two-year
terms by the membership during state conferences. OCRID is governed
by our Bylaws. The state is split into seven Local
Affiliate Chapters (LACs) which provide organization at a local level.
Both the state and the LACs organize a variety of events,
including workshops and conferences full of professional development opportunities for
interpreters.
We also strive to educate the public about sign language interpreting and encourage those who are interested in joining
the profession. Membership in OCRID is open not only to
working interpreters, but also to other interested individuals, organizations, and
students as well.
